HOW TO HELP

Annual Report 2003

Financial Literacy Services

The goal of these free classes is to teach people with low to moderate income how to plan for their future self-sufficiency. Underwritten with private funding from organizations such as American Express Foundation's Economic Freedom Grant program, this course used materials and curricula developed by the National Endowment for Financial Education.

Materials are free to participants; they learn the advantages of balancing their checkbook, establishing a budget, setting financial goals, etc. They will also learn about special programs for low and moderate income people that will enable them to double their savings toward a mortgage down payment or toward opening a new business.

Knowing your rights is the easy part. Exercising them can be a bit trickier.
